Questions

I tapped a sign with my phone and a web page opened.

You tapped an Ajar door sign. Its NFC chip holds a link, and your phone opened it. The page shows the owner's status if they have chosen to share it, and the Ajar home page if not. Nothing was read from your phone.

The sign shows a six-digit number.

That is the pairing passkey. The sign shows it once, when a phone pairs for the first time. Type it into the prompt on your iPhone. Only phones that have paired this way can change the sign.

Tapping the sign does nothing.

Hold the top edge of your iPhone flat against the tap mark and keep it there for a second; the antenna is at the top of the phone. Background tag reading needs an iPhone XS or later with the screen on. If the tap opens a web page but does not change the sign, the Shortcuts automation that runs Ajar is missing: the app's setup walks you through making it.

The app says it cannot reach the sign.

Stand within a few metres of the door, make sure Bluetooth is on, and tap the sign once to wake it; it advertises for half a minute after a tap and listens slowly the rest of the time. If the app says the pairing was lost, forget the sign in Settings and pair again with the passkey on the panel.

The panel flashed black and white.

That is a full refresh. The sign does one whenever the panel switches between paper and ink, and once a day to clear ghosting. The rest of the time it changes only the words.

Does Ajar need Wi-Fi, an account or a subscription?

No. The sign and the app talk over Bluetooth and nothing else. There is nothing to sign up for.

Which iPhones work?

Any iPhone running iOS 17 or later for the app. Tapping the sign needs background tag reading, which iPhones from the XS onwards have.
